Death Trap!

Accident Information for 2012
Introduction:
It is as if these workers are hourly and daily contract laborers who have absolutely no benefits or legal rights. Still the poor people from the northern part of the country coming here to survive the families and the yard authorities are not providing any formal training and pre-cautions to the workers. The only thing the workers get from the shipyard owner is their daily wages.  The workers could use boots and gloves, but they never get them from the owners.  There is no ambulance in the yard for workers who are badly injured and need to be raced to a hospital.
Types of accidents:

  • Explosions or fire, as the ships are full of toxic gas
  • Suffocations by the toxic gases
  • Slipped and fall of iron pieces
  • Fall from the top of the ship

Major Reasons:

  • Lack of training and pre-cautionary measurements
  • Absence of Personal Protective Equipments (PPE)
  • Lack of skill supervisors like –marine engineers etc.
  • Dependence of manual process of cutting and loading
  • Lack of compliance and respect to the laws
